Thin line just above the lip
- Grow time
- 2 to 4 weeks
- Wax
- None (too much looks greasy)
- Upkeep
- Very high, daily edging
One from the front and one from the side works best.
Pick a photo to see how it works. It stays on your phone.
When the check is on, you'll tell it the style you're going for, the wax you used, and how the center, sides, tips and skin feel. The camera can't see those.
Example. Not a real person.

The hair runs past the mouth corners and the tips are waxed into upward curls. (agreed)
Seen in the side photo. People report almost no fix that works for this yet.
Try a little less wax and twist only the very tips, then check again from the side.
Only some hairs reach the curl yet, which is normal while it grows.
Keep growing, and don't trim the sides to even them out yet.
That changes which wax will hold for you.
What real wearers said about each wax, counted from over 1,800 posts, reviews and comments.
Each report is one person saying a wax worked, didn't, or was mixed for them, from Reddit, YouTube, forums, store reviews and the Handlebar Club. Reports are people, not lab tests, and one person can fail with a great wax. Store reviews come mostly from the makers' own sites, which skew positive, so a complaint there counts for more. Hold levels are what the maker says. Few reports means we just don't know yet.
Order matters as much as product. Tap a step for the why.

Morning
Night
Things that feel natural but work against you.
Your fingers naturally roll the hair toward your face, which may be why the curl flops forward. Rolling back toward your ear is a guess: no reports back it, and in our own test the tips still rolled forward. Twist only the very tips and keep the base wide. Some guys pinch to a point instead of twisting at all.
Over-applying is the most common mistake, per Death Grip's own FAQ. Pea-sized, split in two.
It glues the center into clumps that hang as fangs. Keep the center nearly wax-free; the stiff wax goes on the handles.
Death Grip says it kills hold. Captain Fawcett oils first. Safest: oil at night, wax in the morning.
Firm wax goes on rough and pulls hairs. Warm it 15 to 30 seconds with a dryer, or warm a small bit on your fingertips.
Some say a flame cooks the tack out. Death Grip's own page says a dryer or a lighter both work. A dryer is the gentler choice.
Strong rosin wax grips like hair-removal wax. Hold the base with one hand while you shape with the other so the pull doesn't reach the roots.
Hair sets in the shape it dries in, and water undoes that set within minutes, so a shower resets yesterday's curl. If the center dries pointing down, wax can't fix it. Blow-dry while damp, combing out to the sides, then cold air.
It flattens the hair dead straight, the opposite of what curled tips need. A mini flat iron or curler used just to set the curl is different: 16 of 18 people who tried it said it worked.
The center holds the sides up. Five forum wearers say don't; one who did called it a disaster.
Barely touches strong wax and dries hair and skin. Oil first, then warm water.
Touching and re-combing set wax cracks it into white flakes and breaks the shape.
Heat and water break hold in different ways. Pick yours below.

Not trimmed tight, not bushy, no styling
Big and bushy, droops over the mouth
Full stache plus bars down to the jaw, chin shaved
Thick, ends droop toward the jaw, lip hair only
Narrow, with long thin strands from the lip corners hanging down
Big, bushy, swept out to the sides
Thick, with tips waxed to points that curl up
A handlebar that stops at the mouth corners
Narrow, long hairs pulled out flat to the sides
Bushy, with tips arching up toward the cheeks
Pencil-thin base, long tips pointing straight up
Drawings are rough guides. Style names vary from source to source; Imperial, Fu Manchu and handlebar are the most argued over. "Competition class" means it is one of the World Beard and Moustache Championships mustache classes. Grow times are mostly from one grooming brand; ones marked (guess) are our estimate and depend on your genetics: facial hair grows about half an inch a month.

Across 693 reports of droop, melting, curls and clumps, 503 don't say which part fails. These are the 190 that do.
From 1,818 posts, reviews and comments (938 Reddit, 423 YouTube, 347 reviews, 110 forum). These are people reports, counted as patterns. They were checked against each other, not against the original posts. Nothing here comes from dry, high-altitude places like Colorado yet. The number on the right is how many rows mention the problem.
